  • Over 60% of English words are based on Latin and Greek roots.

  • Word roots are the basis of a word, usually formed by adding other parts. Word roots often--but not always--can’t stand by themselves as their own English words.

  • Word roots are sometimes in the middle of a word, and sometimes at the beginning or end.

    • Prefix: A root you attach to the beginning of a word.

    • Suffix: A root you attach to the end of a word.

  • Words can have more than one root.

  • Haikus are a traditional Japanese poem form. They have:

    • Three lines

    • Five syllables in the first line

    • Seven syllables in the second line

    • Five syllables in the third line
